MVMA Delegate Report
by Adam Duris
Bills to Oppose (MVMA in active pursuit of defeat):
- SB 883 & HB 2470 (Livestock Reproductive Specialists): These bills allow qualified “livestock reproductive specialists” to perform advanced reproductive technologies under the indirect supervision of a veterinarian. While it clarifies that invasive oocyte removal is considered the practice of veterinary medicine, it exempts specialists from this classification for other embryo or oocyte transfers and cryopreservation. The acts also establish a Certification Examination Committee and specific academic/membership requirements for these specialists.
Bills to Support (MVMA actively supports):
- HB 1881 & SB 1724 (Xylazine Classification): These bills add xylazine to the Schedule III controlled substances list. Both include exceptions for manufacturing animal drugs and the administration of the drug to animals by veterinary professionals.
- HB 1795 (Professional Practice Preemption): This bill prevents local political subdivisions from enacting regulations that interfere with the practice of various licensed professionals, including veterinarians, ensuring oversight remains at the state level.
