MVMA Updates

Feb 12, 2014

Your Executive Board met Thursday January 30, 2014 during the MVMA Convention in Tan-Tar-A. Some highlights of the meeting include:

    • The Veterinary Mobility Act (Senate Bill 1171/House Bill 1528), which would allow veterinarians to carry controlled from one location to another has passed the Senate in Washington, D.C. It is still in the House and will likely pass.

    • Missouri House Bill 877, which seeks to redefine veterinary medicine, did not proceed through the Missouri Legislature. Even so, it remains a concern and will not go away. The legislative committee will closely monitor this piece of legislation.

  • Missouri Senate Bill 646 which would create a Commission of Animal Care Facilities (also known as the State Commission of Commercial Breeders). It would replace inspectors from the Department of Agriculture and State Veterinarians. It does not appear to have adequate support at this time.

  • The State Rabies Bill which was vetoed by the Governor, will not be reintroduced at this time. The Plan is to resubmit when the “environment in Jefferson City” is more receptive to it.

  • Tuesday March 4, 2014 is Veterinary Day at the Capitol in Jefferson City. If you have time, plan on attending and show our legislators we support them and what they do for Veterinary Medicine.

  • The Missouri Veterinary Medical Board will now be administering the State Examination (rather than contracting testing out to a third party). It will now be an “open book” test.

Respectfully,
