Bio: Dr. Andrew Claude is an associate professor of veterinary anesthesiology at the Oregon State University College of Veterinary Medicine. He received his DVM from Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1992. After doing general practice for thirteen years, he returned to Iowa State where he completed residency training in comparative veterinary anesthesiology. In September of 2015, Dr. Claude earned diplomat status in the American College of Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia. Prior to coming to Oregon State in 2022, he was on faculty at the Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine for seven years and Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine for six and one-half years. Dr. Claude’s special interests and research include pain management utilizing integrative medicine.
Lecture Titles/Summaries:
Ouch!! What is a Pain?! (1 hour)
This lecture will discuss normal and abnormal physiology regarding intra-operative nociception. What is good pain and when does it go bad? We will discuss factors involved with both peripheral and central wind-up including the role of Nerve Growth Factor. Lastly, the concept of preventive analgesia will be discussed and how multi-modal analgesia should be applied to veterinary patients.
Hey, It is Time to Block Nociception! (1 hour)
This lecture will discuss common regional anesthesia procedures in dogs and cats utilizing ultrasound guided techniques. The primary focus will involve the forelimbs, rear limbs, and abdomen. In addition, we will discuss epidurals (lumbosacral and caudal), dental blocks if time allows.
Multi-modal Analgesia; We Have Other Friends Besides Opioids… (1 hour)
This lecture will discuss tried and true options for pre, intra, post-operative, and chronic/maladaptive pain management for dogs and cats based on the preventive (multi-modal) approach. We will also discuss some integrative approaches and new (ish) anesthetic/analgesic options; what they are and when they should be utilized.
Liver, Kidneys, and Heart are Sick? No Problem!! (1 hour)
This lecture will discuss anesthesia management of patients with co-morbidities including liver, kidney, cardiac, endocrine and other conditions.
Small Animal Veterinary Anesthesia: A Few Case Studies, Miscellaneous, and Other Stuff. (1 hour)
This lecture will be a continuation of lecture 4; however, we will discuss other situations via a case study approach. For example, fractious dogs, cats, and brachycephalic patients. We will also discuss some newer drugs and/or older drugs being used in new ways for specific occasions.
What is Most Scary, a Patient Waking Up During Surgery, or the Alternative? (1 hour)
This lecture will be dedicated to identifying and mitigating common complications and issues involving pre, intra, and post-operative anesthesia for small animal patients.
