Subject: Oncology
Speaker: Sandra Bechtel, DVM, DACVIM (Oncology)
Bio: Dr. Sandra Bechtel received her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Michigan State University, then completed an internship at Mississippi State University and residency specializing in medical oncology at Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists in Houston, Texas. After obtaining board certification, she joined the University of Missouri where she achieved tenure in 2016 before joining the University of Florida in 2017 as an Associate Professor. She has published numerous manuscripts investigating the immunology of cancer and novel cancer therapies in addition to presenting continuing education in national and international meetings. She joined Fetch Specialty and Emergency Veterinary Centers in 2024. Her clinical interests include new cancer therapies and quality of life focused cancer care.
Lecture Titles/Summaries:
Cancer Emergencies and How to Treat Them (1 hour)
During this 50-minute discussion, we will cover the most common presenting complaints on an urgent/emergent basis, recommend initial supportive care measures, diagnostics, and how to discuss potential diagnoses with clients.
Canine and Feline Lymphoma – Helpful Updates (1 hour)
During this 50-minute period, we will review canine and feline lymphomas, then discuss updates, including new chemotherapy protocols and new treatments available.
Mast Cell Tumor Updates (1 hour)
During this 50-minute period, we will briefly review canine and feline mast cell tumors, discuss updates in prognosis and review new treatments available.
Updates in Diagnostics and Treatment of Cancer (1 hour)
During this 50-minute period, we will discuss new screening and diagnostic tests available for dogs and cats, some of which are direct to clients, in addition to new cancer therapies not covered in other periods.
Hemangiosarcoma (1 hour)
During this 50-minute period, we will briefly review canine and feline hemangiosarcoma, discuss updates in diagnosis (including pre-surgical stats), prognosis and treatment.
Cytology Refresher (1 hour)
During this 50-minute interactive discussion, we will review case history, cytology images, and then follow up treatments and prognosis.
